How can the Christian concept of the imago Dei inform a holistic perspective of the patient within their family and community?

Sample Answer

Imago Dei is the belief that all human beings are created in the likeness and image of God. It is the foundation on which Christians interact with other people and this includes the community, patients, and their families (Peppiatt, 2022). Nurses, in their roles as researchers, educators, leaders, policymakers, and advocates are situated to build cultural competency and foster conversation that improves the well-being and health of all people. Nurses should adhere to the concept of Imago Dei in attending to patients and families from different backgrounds. All patients and families should be treated equally regardless of their socioeconomic background, race, and ethnic group.

There are various ways in which Imago Dei is used to provide care to patients from a holistic perspective. Imago Dei requires healthcare providers to treat patients with inherent dignity by recognizing that every patient is created in the image of God and this underscores their innate worth. This means that every patient is treated with a lot of compassion and respect regardless of their social and health status. The principle of Imago Dei is used to provide holistic care as it acknowledges that human beings are not merely physical human beings but they are also relational, emotional, and spiritual beings. Thus, the healthcare system should not only address the physical condition of the patients but should also consider their social, spiritual, and emotional needs. Human beings, created in God’s image, are usually relational (Sipos, 2022). This means that it is important for the patients to form relationships with the members of the community and family. There are various ways in which nurses can provide holistic care to patients while adhering to the principle of Imago Dei. Nurses should listen to understand the fears and concerns of the patients. They ensure that they provide physical, emotional, and spiritual care to the patients.
