Sample Answer

Discuss potential causes of conflict occurring within health care organizations.

Conflicts in healthcare organizations occur due to breakdowns in communication. Breakdown in communication due to unclear instructions, language barriers, and lack of access to information can cause conflict in healthcare. Conflicts in healthcare are due to differences in goals and values where team members have different priorities resulting in disagreement. The scarcity of resources is a cause of conflict as this leads to conflict and competition among the members of the team. Role ambiguity characterized by unclear responsibilities leads to conflicts due to failure to understand boundaries and tasks (ANA, 2023). Additionally, personality clashes due to differences in working style lead to conflict.

What are some principles of negotiation and conflict resolution used by the nurse leader to address conflict?

Nurse leaders can address conflicts in the workplace by active listening. Active listening enables the leaders to understand the perspectives of the team members involved in a conflict. Nurse leaders utilize open communication to encourage all the parties to openly express their feelings and thoughts. In conflict resolution, nurse leaders focus on the interests of the team members and not the positions that they hold in a conflict. Nurse leaders seek to create a win-win situation to ensure that all the parties are satisfied with the decisions made. Additionally, nurse leaders utilize objective criteria in formulating procedures for conflict resolution.

What model or leadership theory would be effective to use in addressing conflict?

The leadership model that is effective in addressing conflicts is transformational leadership. Transformational leadership emphasizes the role of leaders in motivating and inspiring the team members. Transformational leaders address conflicts by inspiring team members to look beyond their interests and work towards the achievement of common goals (Ghorbani et al., 2023). These leaders encourage innovation by encouraging the team members to come up with creative solutions. Transformational leaders provide individualized interventions as they understand the unique aspirations and needs of the team members.
