How does your own definition of spiritual care compare with the Christian definition of spiritual care?
I would define spiritual care as the type of care that meets the religious and spiritual needs of the patients when they are facing pain, grief, loss, and illnesses. Spiritual care is essential in helping patients heal emotionally, manage any feelings of fear, and find meaning in the face of suffering and illness. I am aware that my definition varies with other people depending on their religious affiliations and personal beliefs. As a nurse, there are several ways that I can provide spiritual care. I can do so by providing patients with psychological and emotional support and helping them patients find purpose in their existence. I can encourage high levels of mindfulness, meditation, and stress-reducing practices and respect the religious and spiritual beliefs of the patients.
Christian defines spiritual care differently as it involves engaging in specific spiritual interventions. Some of the spiritual interventions according to Christianity are scripture reading and praying, providing sacraments such as Holy Communion and anointing the sick, pastoral counseling, and encouraging the patients to have a personal relationship with God and relying on faith all the time (Tavares et al., 2022). As a nurse utilizing the Christian worldview, it is my obligation to provide spiritual care to Christian patients. I can do so by asking patients if I can pray for them. Sometimes, nurses are unsure of when and how to ask patients to pray for them, and thus I would regard it as a general rule of thumb to ask patients if they would like you to pray for them. I would give hope to the patients by sharing with them the words I the scripture. The Bible has an amazing way of encouraging people and uplifting the brokenhearted. Additionally, another way to provide spiritual care is to support the patients within their own faith and tradition (Nourian, 2018).
