Article 1 - Disability Institutionalization in Georgia
- Key players: Georgia State officials, people living with disabilities, mental health professionals, and patient advocates.
- Central issue: Segregation of people living with mental health diseases and developmental disabilities.
- When: The issue is ongoing. According to patients’ advocates, Georgia has historically marginalized disabled people putting their health at risk. The Department of Justice, state officials, and patient advocates acknowledge that there is a need to implement strategies to enhance disabled people's community placements (Whitehead, 2024). Some of the reasons that hinder fast community placement of disabled people are workforce shortage, loss of momentum over time, lack of political will, and the scale of the undertaking.
- Where: A mental health institution in Georgia.
- Suppliers of health policy: The executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the government. These three arms are obligated to make and implement laws on the placement of disabled people in community settings, provide housing support for people with mental health issues, and provide housing to this population.
- Demanders of health policy: Advocates for people living with disabilities advocate for fast replacement and community service providers acknowledge that there is an already existing shortage of homes for this population.
- Purchasers of health policy: Medicaid does not reimburse longer stays at the psychiatric hospitals.
- Communities and individuals: Disabled people experience adverse physical, mental, and emotional effects from long hospital stays.
Article 2 - Immigration Detention Health Inspections in California
- Key players: The GEO group, California public health officers, state lawmakers, immigrant advocates, immigrant detainees, and the Department of Homeland Security (Sánchez, 2024).
- Central issue: Unsanitary conditions and denial of medical and mental health care among immigrants in detainee centers (Sánchez, 2024).
- When: Ongoing. The GEO group is suspected of undermining efforts to inspect its facilities as it operates under contract of the federal government.
- Where: An immigrant detainee center in California.
- Suppliers of health policy: Obligated to establish provisions to inspect immigration detention facilities.
- Demanders of health policy: Organizations and interest groups have spent a lot of time and money on efforts to enhance the health of immigrants.
- Purchasers of health policy: Detainees spend a lot of money pursuing healthcare services.
- Communities and individuals: Detainees suffer from medical neglect, crowded living conditions, and lack of access to mental health services (Sánchez, 2024).
