Provide a summary of your article. Include the name of the newspaper and author, as well as date of publication.
The article that I have chosen to examine is titled 'A trafficking hotline could be forced to report to police. Victims may stop calling, advocates say.' This article is available on Washington Post and it was published on July 14, 2023. The author of the article is Brittany Shammas who is a general assignment reporter for the Washington Post. The article provides a summary of a Bill in the house that would require law enforcement to access information made on calls reporting sex trafficking. This bill will eliminate the need for the consent of the callers to report trafficking (Shammas, 2023). The supporters of the Bill emphasize that it will play a crucial role in stopping the traffickers and helping the victims get more tips from law enforcement.
Include data that supports the significance of the topic. For example, related deaths, health care costs, demographic information.
Data on child sex trafficking has revealed that the average age of the traffickers is 28.5 years and three-quarters of the sex traffickers are male. The cases of child sex trafficking increased by 17% from 2019 to 2020 and children comprised 69% of sex trafficking victims in 2020. Research on federal trafficking cases revealed that more than 50% of the sex trafficking victims were children aged 4 to 17 years and an average age of 15 years (National Advisory Committee on the Sex Trafficking of Children and Youth, 2022). 89% of the victims of sex trafficking were aged between 14 and 17 years and 45.1% of the victims knew the trafficker before.
During NR503, we discussed the determinants of health, at-risk groups, social justice theory, outcomes, inter-professional collaboration, advocacy, and other concepts related to epidemiology and population health. How do the concepts addressed in NR503 relate to your article's topic? Provide definitions and examples in your writing.
Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) can be defined as non-medical but health factors that affect the quality of life of a person. The determinants of health that are associated with sex trafficking are social class, age, gender, relationship status, education, poverty, and vocational training. The population at risk of sex trafficking are children and women. Sex trafficking can only be solved when all the healthcare providers collaborate in creating policies that inhibit sex trafficking. Healthcare providers as the mandatory reporters should collaborate with other members of the interdisciplinary team in solving the problem of sex trafficking.
Integrate information from the World Health Organization and the SDG's.
According to the World Health Organization, human trafficking has psychological and physical effects. Individuals who are trafficked require mental and physical health services and this includes counseling and sexual healthcare. Health systems and healthcare providers are well-positioned to treat and protect the victims of trafficking. SDG 5: Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls and target 2 advocates for the elimination of all types of violence against girls and women in both private and public spaces (Note, 2020). This includes and is not limited to sex trafficking.
