Describe the difference in roles between leadership and management.
Leadership is the process of influencing people to meet the objectives set. This is different from management where it is an act of management of people at a work environment for the purposes of achieving the set objectives and goals (Indeed Editorial Team, 2023). The major concentration of the goal is to influence other people and for the management, it is ruling over other people. It is crucial for leaders to foresee the future and management is meant to meet the short-term goals. Another difference between leadership and management is that leadership aims at generating change in an organization and management aims at yielding stability (Indeed Editorial Team, 2023).
Explain how the goals of management and leadership overlap and provide one example.
There are overlapping goals of both leadership and management. The leadership characteristics that differentiates between good and great managers. Management and leadership functions are not just complementary but they are used to describe performance levels in an organization and the hierarchies in leadership (Indeed Editorial Team, 2023). Managers always strive to possess leadership skills and leaders require management skills for them to lead effectively. In terms of focus, both leaders and manager focus on meeting the short- and long-term goals of the entire organization.
As a nurse leader, describe how you can facilitate change by taking advantage of this overlap.
It is crucial for me to utilize both leadership and management skills in my role as a nurse leader. As a manager, I will be able to plan for nursing activities and ensure that all the goals in the organization are met. Some of the leadership skills that I should utilize as a nurse leader are honesty, compassion, empathy and motivation as they are essential in inspiring change in the organization (Specchia et al., 2022). Both management and leadership skulls enable nurses to fuel changes in nursing organizations. Nurses accept changes in the processes and structures in the organization and they should recognize that there is a need to respond to changing realities in the organization and contribute significantly to the growth in the organization.
