The terms leading and managing are often used interchangeably. Leading involves motivating and inspiring the team members to work towards the achievement of a common goal. It influences leaders to focus on innovation, change, or the bigger picture. On the other hand, managing involves directing and controlling resources and people according to the policies, values, or principles established. Often, managers focus on processes, structures, and systems.

In the healthcare system, the Advanced Registered Nurses (ARNs) are both leaders and managers. ARNs, as leaders in healthcare, motivate and inspire the nurses, advocate for the patients, families, and caregivers, and introduce changes to improve patient care. They lead with respect, empathy, and professionalism in all their interactions. ARNs as managers delegate tasks in healthcare, organize the nursing teams, ensure adherence to healthcare procedures and policies, and manage healthcare resources (Williamson, 2023). They exhibit their management skills by giving and providing feedback, setting clear expectations in care delivery, and maintaining open and effective communication all through.

One strategy that is used by ARNs to lead and manage nurses in healthcare is the utilization of transformational leadership. Transformational leaders inspire nurses to exceed their performance goals by fostering an environment characterized by trust, innovativeness, and team work. Within the team members, transformative leaders hold meetings that require everyone to share their concerns and ideas. This motivates the team members as they feel listened to and it is also essential in resolving conflicts promptly (Ferreira et al., 2020). Before making any decisions, transformative leaders are keen to listen to the concerns of all the stakeholders. They listen to the patients' concerns to ensure that the decisions in care delivery align with their beliefs, values, and preferences. Additionally, through transformative leadership, leaders know to whom and when to assign responsibilities and tasks.
