Assignment Prompt
Discuss the Million Man March and the rise of Minister Louis Farrakhan to prominence in the 1990s.
The Million March is undoubtedly one of the largest gatherings of black people. The march took place on 16th October 1995 and it consisted of highly educated, older, and middle-class black men. It symbolized the collaboration of black men in enhancing their political and social empowerment. The speakers in the march included community activists and religious leaders (Amistad Digital Resource, 2009). This march was supported by the slogan "Farrakhan may have called the march, but the march belongs to us." This meeting was highly condemned by the black feminists who majorly condemned homophobia and patriarchy. The march was also praised by many people as it played a crucial role in raising awareness of the black people's struggle against structural inequities (Amistad Digital Resource, 2009).
The march provided Farrakhan an avenue to emerge from the crowd and articulate the vision that he had for the black people in America. This march provided hope to the black Americans and it enabled Farrakhan to assume leadership in the civil rights movement. Farrakhan, in an attempt to strengthen his leadership claims and immediate goals, gave a 2.5-hour speech on black liberation, self-improvement, and racism in the United States of America (Gibson, 2022). He took the opportunity to defend himself against the critics and delegitimize his role in the protest. In the March, he represented himself as a divine prophet who would lead the entire community to liberation. During the March, Farrakhan was able to meet a lot of black people who were dedicated to achieving social change in the organization. Overall, the Million Man March will be remembered as a powerful demonstration of black men in an attempt to support the communities (Gibson, 2022). However, other people still criticize the march as Farrakhan, instead of communicating a message of hope, love, and unity, he utilized the opportunity to gain control and seize power.
