Assignment Prompt
Choose one of the following health dysfunctions: musculoskeletal, metabolic, or multisystem. Describe pathophysiological changes, abnormal findings, and symptoms of the chosen health dysfunction. How does it affect the patient's functions?
Choose one of the following health dysfunctions: musculoskeletal, metabolic, or multisystem.
The health dysfunction that I have chosen is musculoskeletal dysfunction. Musculoskeletal pain affects the tendons, muscles, ligaments, joints, and bones. This pain can be chronic as long long-lasting or acute; severe and sudden. There are various types of musculoskeletal pain and they include; muscle pain, joint pain, bone pain, and ligament and tendon pain (Cleveland Clinic, 2021). Bone pain is caused by fractures in the bone as well as other musculoskeletal injuries. Joint pain is characterized by inflammation and stiffness of the joints. Muscle pain is usually in the form of cramps, muscle spasms, and other injuries. On the other hand, tendon and ligament pain are caused by strains, sprains, and overuse injuries (Cleveland Clinic, 2021).
Describe pathophysiological changes, abnormal findings, and symptoms of the chosen health dysfunction. How does it affect the patient's functions?
There exists a relationship between the ergonomic factors of repetition and force and musculoskeletal disorders severity. High levels of exposure to the forces increase the probability of occurrence of musculoskeletal disorders. Tissue reorganization and tissue injuries in the musculoskeletal system occur in many tissues such as the bones, peripheral nerve, loose connective tissue, tendon, and muscles. Injuries in the tissues cause chronic or acute inflammation and systemic inflammation (Musculoskeletal Key, 2019). The tissues affected by musculoskeletal pain have reduced tolerance for exposure to forceful and repetitive tasks and this makes them vulnerable to being injured again which results in a repetitive cycle of pain, injury, and disability. The major abnormal findings that are related to the pain are the appearance of nodules and effusions. The major symptoms of musculoskeletal pain include stiffness and aching, fatigue, burning sensation in the muscles, sleep disturbances, and pain while moving (Musculoskeletal Key, 2019). Musculoskeletal disorders adversely affect the patient's quality of life as they inhibit the ability of the patient to move from one place to another. The disorders lead to unproductivity and independence and this ends up generating high indirect and direct costs to healthcare and society in general.
