Rapid Needs Assessment (RNA) involves assessing the population affected as part of the national contingency planning approach. This assessment is an approach that identifies the immediate needs that should be met during a disaster. RNA provides information on the best courses of action, needs, and resource requirements (Bosmans et al., 2022). It should be conducted within 72 hours after the onset of a disaster. For healthcare providers, RNA intensifies the understanding of the various factors that affect behaviors during emergencies and the best support to reduce the risk during disasters. Needs assessment enables healthcare providers to obtain information on how communities and households perceive the emergency, what they know about the disaster, the barriers and facilitators in the adoption of protective behaviors, and the influence of social and cultural dynamics in responding to disasters. Additionally, the knowledge derived from RNA is essential in developing interventions that foster success in response to a disaster (Bosmans et al., 2022).

Cultural awareness during a disaster ensures that the services provided are respectful and responsive to the victims of the disaster's health practices and beliefs. By meeting the linguistic and cultural needs of the victims, healthcare providers can provide high-quality care. Understanding of the victims' culture determines their local beliefs, customs, and preferences in disaster aid. Local customs affect the willingness of people to obtain healthcare services during a disaster. For instance, other people may prefer taking private transportation to a hospital rather than an ambulance as they perceive it to be used to transport dead people (Rahmani et al., 2022). Other cultures prefer traditional healing and medicine rather than hospital treatment and this prevails even during a disaster. In the Sri Lankan culture, widowed women due to disasters and war are associated with the loss of respect and social status and this leads to anxiety and depression. Additionally, different cultures mourn their loved ones differently and healthcare providers should consider this in care provision (Rahmani et al., 2022).
