Sample Answer
Based on your experience, explain how systems thinking helps leaders build strong interprofessional and organizational relationships.
System thinking is a holistic approach to solving problems that analyze how the different system works and how the system behaviors can be improved. It is a perspective that enables nurses to understand the interactions and relationships between the different systems (Miles, 2022). This enhances their ability to build strong relations with colleagues in the workplace. In enhancing interprofessional collaboration, systems thinking enables nurse leaders to establish how a single part of the system affects the other parts. This understanding fosters communication among nurses with different skills in the organization. Holistic consideration of the systems enhances the making of decisions that are beneficial to the organization as a whole and not a team or one department. Additionally, system thinking is essential in identifying the limitations of a system and this enhances better utilization of resources and improves processes.

Some of the tools that nurse leaders can use to aid systems thinking are simulation modeling, system maps, and causal loop diagrams. Simulation modeling allows healthcare leaders to analyze and have an understanding of the different scenarios and how they affect all the systems in healthcare. Leaders can use system maps to identify the resources in a system and critical partnerships in the system. On the other hand, the causal loop diagrams demonstrate the interrelationships between the various variables and how they influence each other (Lin et al., 2020). Some of the components of the Interprofessional Education Collaborative (IPEC) are teams and teamwork, interprofessional communication, responsibilities/ roles, and ethics/ values for interprofessional practice. These competencies enable nurses to understand the roles of different individuals in the organization and promote teamwork and communication. Additionally, consideration of ethics and values in the system ensures that the patients' and organizations' best interests are met.
