The United States healthcare system has evolved over time to incorporate a shift to value-based healthcare. Initially, the healthcare system utilized the fee-for-service model where the healthcare providers are reimbursed based on the quantity of the services provided. This model was ineffective as it led to the overuse of increased costs of care and services without improving patient outcomes. The shift towards value-based healthcare enhances the quality of care delivered and this improves patient outcomes. In this model of care, healthcare providers are reimbursed to reduce the incidences and effects of diseases, improve the health of patients, and enable the population to live healthily.
Value-based healthcare impacts the delivery of care services as it emphasizes the team-based approach in care provision while focusing on preventing and managing chronic diseases. The approach emphasizes an integrated and coordinated care approach that emphasizes shared decision-making and patient engagement (Teisberg et al., 2020). In the implementation of the value-based model, advanced registered nurses are the primary care providers. Nurses, under this model, focus on prevention of disease, health promotion, and chronic disease management. Their role in this model expands to advocacy, leadership, and policy-making.

Up to now, there has been an increased focus on the management of the health of individuals suffering from chronic diseases. This has led to an increase in the demand for care services. The utilization of technologies such as electronic health records, telehealth, and mobile health applications is on the rise and they have facilitated the storage of healthcare data and the provision of care without in-person visits to the facility (Manocchia, 2020). Additionally, there is an increased demand for primary care services. This can be attributed to the advanced age of the general population and thus, increased need for care services.
