Vendor-Managed Inventory (VMI) involves the establishment of strategic relationships between the customers and the vendors. VMI is beneficial in aligning the inventory with the demands of the customers. In a VMI relationship, the suppliers have the ability to adjust the inventory to match the demands of the customers. VMI streamlines processes and lowers the costs that are associated with achieving efficiency in inventory management. Another advantage of VMI is that it improves the data insights (DXP Marketing, 2019). VMI programs analyze data from suppliers to yield a new understanding of the actual demands of the products. The data enables businesses to work in collaboration with customers to achieve a competitive advantage due to timely deliveries and high-quality service yield. Additionally, VMI improves sales figures as it enables the suppliers to possess an understanding of the actual demands of the customers and this increases sales Communication and transparency are enhanced between the suppliers and the customers and this allows suppliers to respond to the future demands of the customers (DXP Marketing, 2019).
One of the firms that utilize VMI is Walmart. Walmart utilizes the model to manage its inventory by making available data on the sales rates and inventory levels to the suppliers. Walmart controls and monitors the transfer of products from the warehouse to the stores and suppliers determine what goods that are needed through the VMI program (Riaz, 2022). The VMI program is advantageous to Walmart sellers as it establishes a mutual relationship between the Walmart sellers and the store. This reduces stock-out situations and the need to decrease the levels of the inventory. VMI replaces the vendors at Walmart them to oversee and manage the consumption of goods. This ensures that products are displayed in the store in the expected manner.
